Ethiopian Angel

A winged cherub, in the Orthodox manner

The angels of Ethiopian Orthodox painting are mostly eyes — wide, level, set in a round face above wings folded symmetrically beneath it. The ceiling at Debre Berhan Selassie in Gondar is covered in them, rank on rank, looking back down. This is one of those faces taken off the panel and into relief, 72mm tall and flat-backed for a wall or a fridge.
