Menilik II, in profile
Menilik II kept the profile of a man who had just turned an empire back — Adwa was 1896, and the medals struck in its wake set him sideways to the viewer the way coins had always shown sovereigns. This one holds to the convention: the head in profile, raised off a plain ground, a worked rim closing the disc.
